Short answer: Are AI engineers in demand? Yes to all the data I have seen, but the size of the surge will vary according to each source’s counting system. Meanwhile, US postings data indicates that despite the cooling down of other tech hiring, AI engineering hiring remained steady at a high level through the first half of 2026. Pay is higher than typical software jobs. The problem is that, unlike generic jobs of “AI engineer”, specialists with deep domain knowledge are being sought.
Are AI Engineers in Demand? What the Hiring Data Says
AI engineering job postings remained strong in the US, as the AI sector continued to attract top talent, against a backdrop of a sluggish tech hiring market, according to a study of 43,480 US postings since the beginning of 2026. Postings remain close to an average of 1550 per week reaching a high of 2327 in late June. The trend line was not described as exploding, but as being flat to slightly rising.

A separate report made in Q1 2026 resonates the same. The top AI/ML engineer position, that saw a 94.5% increase from the previous year, had 19,297 jobs. The same report revealed that jobs for AI-related work increased by 48.9% in the last two years.

Other sources give higher numbers. In 2025, the number of jobs using AI/ML technology has increased by 163% year over year and AI Engineer is the fastest-growing position in the United States, according to a staffing company. These numbers are not in opposition to one another as much as they measure different things which is why the next section is important.

The problem of unbalanced numbers (Original Comparison)
I reconcile the main sources to make it easy for you to understand the reasons for the variations in headline figures. Do not attempt to rank the accuracy of these treatments as this is merely an editorial comparison.
| Source type | Headline figure | What it likely measures | Caution |
| City with population of 1,000 or more | 122,500 | Population of the city at the start of the year | None required |
| Postings analytics (Axial) | About 1,550 weekly AI engineering postings in the US, including only public job boards, no growth or decline | A narrow job family over time | US only, public job boards only |
| Recruitment report (Broadbean) | AI/ML engineer postings rise 94.5% year on year (YoY) | Specific title across vacancies | Title-based, so the change in title impacts it |
| The choice staffing firm (Kore1) experienced a 163% increase in AI/ML job postings in 2025.AI/ML job postings increased 163% for the choice staffing firm (Kore1) this year, in the broad AI/ML category, published by a firm that sells recruiting. | |||
| Job-market blog (Interview Query) | Postings requiring AI skills up 73% (2023 to 2024) | Any posting that mentions AI skills | Counts mentions, not dedicated engineering roles |
The number of job openings specifically for AI engineers isn’t necessarily going up at the same time the number of jobs including AI is. The percentage changes with title, time window and sources. Opt for posts based analysis with specified sample size, and be wary of claims that talent is scarce by recruiters.
What AI Engineers Earn
There is more variation than most articles would suggest with regard to the salary. These reports highlight a median salary of $176,000 for AI engineers in the United States and $162,240 for all other AI roles in Q1 2026, which is a 3.2% increase from the previous year. The average staffing guide in 2025 was $206,000 according to 1 staffing guide. A live-postings tracker shows posted pay of $197,582 for 244 postings that reveal salary.

The premium is money invested but not as big as some newspapers report. AI software developers made a median of $169,052 in Q1 2026, while non-AI software developers earned $145,600. The same report reported that salaries increased at a more gradual rate than vacancies.

A good rule of thumb, as per one salary guide, is to base the comparison on level, specialization and geography, rather than a single average.
Who’s really being recruited?Which are really hiring?
Two trends emerge from the sources:
- Specialists over generalists. More than 75% of AI job postings explicitly mention the need for deep domain expertise, and the term “AI engineer” seems to be losing its value, according to one report.
kore1 - Credentials still matter. 72% of AI engineering jobs require a degree. Generally, those who are self-taught will need to work hard to make up for it.

The emphasis is on focus and not dispersion in Geography. California accounts for 20% of the AI engineering jobs, and there are high demand areas in Austin, Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas.

The Demand Fit Score (Original Framework)
Take this 5-question quiz to determine if the market is right for you. Give 1 Point to each Yes.
- Have a specific area of interest, like NLP, computer vision, MLOps or applied AI, or are you broadly interested in AI?
- Are you able to demonstrate courses or can you demonstrate shipped work?
- Are you knowledgeable about a field that is recruiting intensively like professional services or the tech industry?
- Do you have a degree that matches the one that most jobs are looking for?
- Do you want to pursue a job in a specific area or in a remote area?
4-5 points: you meet the requirements that employers are seeking. 2-3 points: apply to a smaller number of schools first. 0-1 point: Develop specialization first; “broad skills” in AI are less distinctive.
Demand Check Before You Commit (Linkable Asset)
- I did compare two data sources, rather than one headline of information.
- I can tell if a statistic has been counted and as a title or as AI mention.
- I checked if it is published by who and do they sell recruiting?
- I looked at salary by level and by specialty, rather than an average of all specialists
- I chose to specialize in one area to garner evidence in one specialization
- I looked at live jobs in my desired city or in an out-of-the-way category
- I noted the degree requirement on postings I want
- I will recheck data in 3 months

These topics are ideal for career, recruiting and developer publications:
- Reading AI job statistics: why the numbers vary between reports.
- From software engineer to AI specialist: which skills transfer.
- When they’re available within the week you’re available to hire, what do you offer?

Are AI engineers in demand? Yes, but the useful answer is more restricted. Demands are highest for specialists who have shipped work, which is least apparent in posts and more apparent in recruiter marketing, and have domain knowledge. Choose one specialty, look at real job postings in your target area and get the Demand Fit Score, then don’t prop your career around any one percentage.
