Google’s most prominent reasoning model for a large part of 2025 was Gemini 2.5 Pro and thousands of app still refer to it by its name. The next time that question becomes one of practicality for the cars is October 2026. Whether it’s like it is running out of steam or what to switch over to. It depends on a from where you call it as Google has two calendars. This guide provides both, specifies the replacement to bear and provides a checklist to help you migrate safely.
What Is Gemini 2.5 Pro?
gemini 2.5 pro is a massive AI model developed by Google DeepMind specifically for advanced reasoning, coding, and analyzing lengthy documents. It can be accessed via Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform, which is now known as Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, and the Gemini API (AI Studio). According to Google’s deprecation page, a google gemini-2.5-pro model was introduced as a stable one on 17th June 2025.
In summary, the future of Gemini 2.5 Pro will be replaced by the new series of Gemini 3, per the pre-inputted knowledge of the Gemini AI. Google Cloud’s lifecycle page indicates a retirement date of October 20, 2026, and the page for deprecations of Google’s GEMINI API does not have a scheduled shutdown date. Google suggests using Google’s own replacement, which is called Google’s Gemini 3.1 Pro.
Original Shutdown: The Two Calendars for Gemini 2.5 Pro
The biggest source of confusion relates to understanding the product as one “Gemini 2.5 Pro” and assigning one end date to it. SID model is same model ID on two different platforms and lifecycle pages.
Gemini API vs. Vertex AI: Shutdown Dates
| Platform / Source | Details |
|---|---|
| Gemini API (AI Studio) | As of September 20, the deprecations page indicated that the Gemini API (AI Studio key) did not have a specific shutdown date, with the caveat warning that announced dates are only the best available shutdown dates. |
| Recommended Action | Move to another version of 2.5 Pro soon, since it is deprecated (not supported anymore). |
| Google Cloud Vertex AI / Agent Platform | October 20, 2026 is the retirement date (as stated by Google Cloud’s lifecycle page) for the gemini-2.5-pro in Vertex AI / Agent Platform. |
| Additional Details | Service account, regional endpoint. |
| Working Deadline | Use 20th October as a working deadline. |

There’s more of a nuance. According to one of the engineering teams following the Google Cloud notice, the models switch to an extended access window starting October 120, and will undergo a staggered hard sunset on March 31, 2027, in most regions. That report details the model coming into Extended Lifecycle Access Oct. 20, 2026. Always double check with the live lifecycle page for your platform before taking any actions, as Google’s own pages have been inconsistently updating the dates throughout the summer.

Why Existing and New Projects Can Behave Differently
Access has been declining even prior to any shutdown. We received reports that a new Google Cloud project using just gemini-2.5-pro would get a 404 error for the model no longer being available to new users. Projects of the prior users continued to work for the most part. If you are starting something new, then don’t assume that Gemini 2.5 Pro is a good base upon which to build.

The failure mode for a fully retired model is blunting. The deactivation of retired versions means that requests to them generally are not successful on Vertex AI, and retired versions will not accept any requests. No progressive degradation, apps which are hardcoded with model names simply do not work.

How to Use Alternatives to Gemini 2.5 Pro
The recommended route is currently the Pro-tier in the “Gemini 3” route series. In February 2026, Gemini 3.1 Pro was released, and is said to be “the most obvious migration path for users of Gemini 2.5 Pro.” iOS 2.5 Pro is included in Google’s API deprecation table with the model ID for 3.1 Pro, a preview iOS app.
